  • Medi-Cal's Asset Limit in 2026 and 2027: What California Families Need to Know

Since January 1, 2026, Medi-Cal counts savings and other assets again for people who are 65 or older, have a disability, or need long-term care. The limit is $130,000 for one person, plus $65,000 for each additional person in the household. On July 1, 2027, the limit drops to $21,000 for one person and $31,000 for a couple. Your home, one car, and household belongings do not count.

For: Adult children and older adults in California, especially families planning nursing home or in-home care

  • What Does a Geriatric Care Manager Do? A Guide for Families

A geriatric care manager is a professional, often a social worker or nurse, who helps families plan and coordinate care for an older adult. They assess health and daily needs, write a care plan, coordinate doctors and services, and check in as things change. Most families pay privately, often $100 to $250 an hour. People on Medi-Cal may qualify for free care management through their health plan or county programs.

For: Adult children and family caregivers, including those who live far away, and older adults planning their own care
